EntryFree

Cambutal sits at the southern end of the Azuero peninsula where the road runs out, a scatter of surf lodges and houses along a beach of dark sand with hills coming down behind it and consistent swell from the open Pacific. It is genuinely remote: the drive from anywhere takes hours and the last stretch is rough. Turtles nest on beaches nearby and the coast east of the village is largely undeveloped.

What you actually see

  • The dark sand beach - a long grey shore with hills rising behind.
  • The Pacific swell - consistent surf that is the reason the village exists.
  • The remoteness - the end of the road at the peninsula's southern tip.
  • The undeveloped coast - beaches running east with almost nothing on them.

When to go

April to October has the most consistent swell, which is also the wet season. December to April is drier with smaller waves. Roads are rough after rain.

Honest expectations

Getting there takes hours from anywhere and the last road is rough. Rip currents are strong and the beach is not for casual swimming. Facilities are surf lodges and little else.

Nearby

Tonosí is north, and Pedasí is northeast.
