Cerro Canajagua rises to around eight hundred and thirty metres in the middle of the Azuero peninsula and is visible from most of it, which makes it the landmark of the region. The climb goes through cleared pasture and then patches of remaining forest to a summit with communications masts on it, and from the top the view runs across the peninsula to the Pacific on one side and the Gulf of Panama on the other. It is hot and largely unshaded.

What you actually see

  • The summit - around eight hundred and thirty metres, the peninsula's landmark.
  • The two-coast view - the Pacific and the Gulf of Panama from the top.
  • The forest patches - the remaining woodland on the upper slopes.
  • The cleared country - the pasture the lower route crosses.

When to go

December to April is the dry season and the practical window. Start early; the climb is hot and unshaded. Haze in the dry season can reduce the view.

Honest expectations

Most of the route is unshaded and the heat is severe by mid-morning. Communications masts occupy the summit. The trail is unmarked and a local guide helps.

Nearby

Macaracas is south, and El Montuoso is northwest.
