Toli Pir

Toli Pir is the high ridge above Rawalakot, a bare grassy crest at around 2,400 metres that rises above the treeline of pine covering the slopes below, and the reward for getting up there is the view: ridge after ridge of green hills running away in every direction, with the Pir Panjal peaks visible on clear days. A small shrine at the top gives the place its name and draws local visitors, and a short walk along the crest opens the views further. In summer the ridge is grazed and covered in grass and wildflowers; in winter it holds snow and becomes a local sledging spot. There are a few stalls and simple huts near the top in season and nothing else, which suits the place. The road up climbs steadily from Rawalakot through villages and forest.

When to go

April to October for green ridge and clear views; the flowers are best in early summer. Winter snow makes it a local outing but the road becomes difficult. Mornings are clearest before cloud builds over the hills.

Honest expectations

The last stretch of road is rough and can need a capable vehicle after rain. The ridge is exposed with no shelter and weather turns quickly. Facilities are a couple of stalls in season and nothing outside it. Litter near the shrine and parking area is a persistent problem.
