Kapurpurawan Rock Formation

Kapurpurawan sits on a low headland on the Ilocos Norte coast, a mass of pale limestone that the wind and the sea have worn into smooth ridges, hollows and one prow-like formation that faces the water. The name comes from the Ilocano word for white. From the car park a paved path of about ten minutes drops to a viewing area on the rocks; local horse owners offer to carry you the distance, which is worth it in the middle of the day mostly for the shade the arrangement does not actually provide. The formation itself is roped off - climbing on it wore the surface down - so you look at it from the platform rather than scrambling over it.

What you actually see

• The white limestone prow - the main formation, worn smooth and roped off from climbing.
• The wind-cut ridges - the grooves and hollows carved along the seaward faces.
• The Burgos coast - the dark volcanic shoreline and surf either side of the pale rock.
• The wind turbines - the Bangui and Burgos turbine lines visible along the ridges inland.

When to go

November to April is dry and the light early or late is far better than midday, both for the rock and for the heat. The amihan wind blows hardest from December to February and makes the headland cold and gusty, which is a relief rather than a problem. Typhoon season from July to October can close the path.

Honest expectations

This is a twenty-minute stop, not a destination, and people who drive three hours for it are usually disappointed. There is no shade at all on the path or the platform and the middle of the day is punishing. You cannot walk on the formation any more. The horse handlers and photo sellers press hard, and the fee structure at the barrier is not always clearly posted.
