Unstad Beach

Unstad sits in a bowl on the exposed northern coast of Vestvagoy, and the swell arriving from the Norwegian Sea makes it the best-known surf break in the Arctic. Two Norwegians brought boards here in 1963 after seeing surfing abroad, and the sport has continued ever since, with a surf camp, school and rental operation now established in the small settlement. The best waves come in autumn and winter, when the water sits around five to seven degrees and the air can be well below freezing, so full hooded wetsuits are standard. The Lofoten Masters competition runs here each autumn. A coastal path leads from Unstad to Eggum along the shore, about nine kilometres.

When to go

September to April for the most consistent swell and the full cold-water experience; June to August for lessons in milder conditions with lighter waves and the midnight sun.

Good to know

Water temperature demands a thick hooded wetsuit, boots and gloves, all rentable but a serious adjustment for warm-water surfers. Rip currents are present and there are no lifeguards. Accommodation is limited and books out in competition weeks; the access tunnel is narrow and unlit.
