Kvalvika Beach

Kvalvika faces the open Atlantic on the far side of Moskenesoya, with no road, no buildings and no facilities: two arcs of pale sand between headlands, backed by green slopes and rock. The approach from Fredvang climbs a boggy path to a saddle in about forty minutes and then drops steeply to the sand, roughly an hour each way. The beach became widely known after the film North of the Sun, in which two Norwegians spent a winter there living in a shelter built from driftwood and beach plastic. Above it rises Ryten, a peak whose cliff ledge gives the aerial view of the whole bay that has become one of Lofoten's signature images.

When to go

June to September, when the path is snow-free and daylight is long; the midnight sun in June and July allows late walks. Winter crossings are possible but the pass is icy and dangerous.

What to expect

The path is muddy, steep in sections and can be exhausting in wind or rain, and there is nothing at the beach: no water, toilets, shelter or signal. Camping is popular but has caused damage and is now discouraged in places. Parking at Fredvang is limited and charged.
