Tvindefossen

Tvindefossen, also called Trollafossen, drops about 110 metres beside the main road north of Voss, and what makes it distinctive is the shape: rather than a single column the water spreads into dozens of white threads across a wide, stepped, moss-covered rock face, so the whole cliff appears to be running. A path from the car park leads to the foot in two minutes, close enough to feel the spray, and visitors can walk partway up beside it. A campsite occupies the field below. Local legend once credited the water with restoring youth or fertility, a story that survives mostly on souvenir bottles sold at the site. It is one of the most photographed roadside waterfalls in Norway precisely because it costs nothing to reach.

When to go

May to July for the fullest flow from snowmelt; it runs year-round but thins in late summer. Early morning avoids the coach traffic that stops here between Bergen and the fjords.

What to expect

It is a roadside stop of twenty minutes with a paid car park, and tour buses arrive frequently in season. The rocks near the base are wet and slippery. The souvenir stand and campsite make the setting less wild than photographs suggest.
