Sverresborg Folk Museum

The Trondelag Folk Museum occupies the hill where King Sverre built a castle around 1183, and the ruins of that fortification stand at the top of the site with a view over the city and fjord. Around and below it are about eighty relocated buildings: farms from across Trondelag, the Haltdalen stave church of about 1170, one of the oldest in Norway, an old town street with a dentist's surgery, a grocer and a post office, and a Sami section. Indoor galleries cover regional history and a large collection of skis. In summer the buildings are staffed and animals are kept on the farms; in December the site runs one of the larger Christmas markets in the region.

When to go

May to September, when the buildings are open and staffed; outside the season the indoor galleries run but most of the site is closed. The December Christmas market is the main winter event.

Practical notes

Winter visits get much less for the ticket, with most buildings locked. The site is spread over a hillside and involves a lot of walking. Getting there requires a bus or car from the centre.

Central Trondheim and Nidaros Cathedral are fifteen minutes away; Kristiansten fortress lies east.
