Swan Hill Pioneer Settlement

The Pioneer Settlement opened in 1966 as Australia's first open-air museum, assembling original and reconstructed buildings into a Murray river town of the 1890s: shops, a school, a printery, a blacksmith, stables and a hotel, staffed in period dress with working trades demonstrated through the day. Horse-drawn wagons and vintage cars carry visitors along the streets, and the paddle steamer Pyap runs short cruises on the river. In the evenings, a sound and light show projects onto the buildings and the riverbank, telling regional history including Aboriginal accounts of the river. Swan Hill itself is a farming centre in the Mallee, hot in summer and surrounded by irrigated horticulture.

When to go

March to November; summer in the Mallee is fierce, often above forty degrees, with little shade in the open streets. The evening show runs after dark and is the main reason to stay overnight. School holidays bring the fullest programme of demonstrations.

Honest expectations

Entry is charged and the evening show is a separate ticket. Not all trades operate every day, particularly midweek in low season. Swan Hill is a long drive from Melbourne with limited alternative attractions.
