Easter in Kautokeino has been the main social gathering of the Norwegian Sami year for generations: the reindeer are still on the winter plateau, the light has returned, and families come in for several days of weddings, baptisms, confirmations and church services alongside a public programme. That programme includes reindeer racing, in which drivers are pulled on skis behind a running reindeer down a track through the village, lasso throwing competitions, joik concerts and the Sami Grand Prix, a song contest in Sami languages that has run since 1990. The Easter festival is one of the few times outsiders can see joik performed in its own social context rather than staged for visitors.
What you actually see
- The reindeer racing - drivers pulled on skis behind running reindeer.
- The Sami Grand Prix - a song contest in Sami languages.
- The joik concerts - traditional song performed in its own context.
- The family gatherings - weddings and church services filling the week.
When to go
Easter week, which moves between late March and April; the dates follow the church calendar and are announced well ahead. Snow conditions matter for the racing, and daytime light is already long by then.
Honest expectations
Accommodation in Kautokeino is very limited and books out entirely for the festival, with many visitors staying in Alta two hours away. Much of the event is a community occasion rather than a show, and behaving as a spectator at family events is not welcome. Temperatures can still be well below freezing.
Nearby
Juhls Silver Gallery is above the village; Alta and the Finnmark plateau lie north.
