EntryTicket; seasonal opening

Njardarheimr opened in 2017 at Gudvangen, where a Viking market had been held for years, and it is built as a functioning village rather than a museum display: timber houses around a square, a longhouse, workshops, and a resident group of craftspeople and interpreters from several countries who work in period clothing making textiles, leather, silver, blades and food, and who talk about Viking-age life without staying rigidly in character. Visitors can try archery and axe throwing. The setting matters: Gudvangen sits at the head of the Naeroyfjord, a UNESCO-listed arm of the Sognefjord walled by cliffs, and the fjord ferry from Flam arrives at the quay a few minutes away.

What you actually see

  • The village - timber houses, workshops and a longhouse around a square.
  • The resident craftspeople - textile, leather, silver and blade work in progress.
  • The activities - archery, axe throwing and craft demonstrations.
  • The Naeroyfjord setting - the UNESCO fjord walls above the site.

When to go

May to September, the main season when the village is fully staffed; a Viking market is held in July. Winter opening is limited or absent. Ferry arrivals from Flam bring groups at set times.

Honest expectations

This is a commercial reconstruction, not an archaeological site, and there is no original material. It closes for much of the year. Gudvangen itself is small and heavily geared to fjord tour traffic.

Nearby

The Naeroyfjord ferry runs to Flam; Stalheimskleiva and Voss lie inland.
