Olumo Rock

Abeokuta means 'under the rock', and Olumo is the rock: the granite mass whose caves sheltered Egba refugees during the nineteenth century's wars, becoming the fortress around which the city grew and the shrine it still honours. The climb - carved stairs threading boulders, with a lift for those who prefer it - passes the war-time caves with their grinding hollows, shrines tended by priestesses, and ancient trees, before the summit opens over Abeokuta's rust-red roofscape, the Ogun River winding through and the first church towers of Yorubaland's missionary era among the tin. History, faith and view stack neatly in a two-hour visit.

Parts of the complex show wear and the lift works when it works - assume stairs. The shrines are active: photograph with permission and keep shoes-and-voice etiquette as guided. The visit is compact; pair with Ake's palace quarter and Itoku market's adire cloth for the full Abeokuta day.
