San Juan de Oriente

San Juan de Oriente is a small village on the Apoyo rim where an unusually large share of families make pottery, and the work is good: thrown or coil-built vessels burnished and painted with fine geometric and animal designs, some copying pre-Columbian pieces excavated in the region, some contemporary. The clay comes from nearby and the older technique involves polishing the surface with a stone before firing, which gives the characteristic sheen. Workshops line the streets and most will show the whole process, from wedging to painting with brushes made from human hair for the finest lines. A cooperative sells collectively. It sits beside Catarina on the standard Pueblos Blancos circuit and takes an hour or two.

When to go

December to April for the circuit. Workshops run on weekdays and are quieter than the tourist-facing showrooms at weekends. It combines with Catarina, Apoyo and Masatepe in a day.

Honest expectations

Some workshops are geared to coach parties and the sales pressure is real; the smaller family ones are more interesting. Quality varies widely and the cheapest pieces are moulded rather than thrown. Packing pottery for travel is a genuine problem.
