Coyotepe Fortress

The Fortaleza de Coyotepe sits on a hill overlooking Masaya, built in the early twentieth century in a commanding position over the road and railway between Managua and Granada. It later served as a prison, and its underground galleries of small cells are shown to visitors by candle or torchlight, which is the part most people remember and which is genuinely grim. The site is now looked after by the Nicaraguan Scouts, who guide visits and maintain the buildings. From the ramparts the view takes in Masaya town, the Masaya volcano complex with its steaming crater, Lake Masaya and, on a clear day, the line of volcanoes north. The visit takes an hour and sits just off the main highway.

• Underground cells - the prison galleries shown by torchlight.
• The ramparts - the walls and towers of the hilltop position.
• Scout guiding - volunteers who maintain and explain the site.

When to go

December to April for the clearest views. Late afternoon light suits the volcano panorama. The site keeps daylight hours and can close unpredictably outside the main season.

Before you go

The underground section is dark, cramped and uncomfortable, and its history as a prison is heavy; it is not a light visit. Bring a torch. The buildings are only partly maintained. Guiding depends on volunteers being present.
