Popoyo

Popoyo is the best-known surf spot on Nicaragua's Emerald Coast, a reef break with a heavy left and right that holds size, with beach breaks, an outer reef and several other named spots within a short drive. What makes this coast unusual is the wind: for much of the year an offshore breeze blows across the isthmus from Lake Nicaragua, holding the waves up and grooming them, which is why the season here is long and reliable. Swells are biggest from March to October. Accommodation ranges from surf camps and hostels to more expensive lodges, spread thinly along dirt roads with little else around. It is a surf destination first and everything else, including the swimming, is secondary.

• Empty coast - long beaches with little development between spots.

When to go

March to October for the biggest swells; the offshore wind blows most reliably from November to April, so the two do not fully overlap. Crowds peak in the northern winter.

Honest expectations

The main break is a reef and not a beginner's wave; there are gentler options nearby but Popoyo itself is not one. Access roads are rough and a vehicle is needed. Facilities are limited and prices high for what they are. Rip currents are strong.
