La Flor Wildlife Refuge

La Flor is a short crescent of dark sand backed by dry forest, and it is one of the small number of beaches worldwide that host arribadas: mass synchronised nesting by olive ridley turtles, when tens of thousands come ashore over a few nights, so densely that they crawl over one another and dig up each other's nests. Arribadas usually fall around the last quarter of the moon between July and January, with the biggest in September and October, but the timing is not exactly predictable. Outside them, individual turtles nest through the season and leatherbacks appear occasionally. Rangers control access at night, groups are limited, and lights and flash are prohibited. Days are quiet, with howler monkeys in the forest behind.

• Hatchling emergences - young turtles leaving nests weeks later.

When to go

July to January for nesting, with arribadas most likely in September and October around the last quarter moon. The exact nights cannot be predicted more than a few days ahead, so flexibility matters. Outside the season there is little to see.

Honest expectations

Arribadas cannot be booked; you go and hope. Night visits are supervised with strict rules on lights, distance and flash, which are there for good reason. The access track is rough and difficult after rain. Facilities are camping or basic ranger accommodation.
