Bosawás Biosphere Reserve

Bosawás takes its name from the Bocay river, Saslaya mountain and the Waspuk river, and it covers a very large area of the northern highlands and lowlands, designated a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 1997; together with adjoining Honduran reserves it forms one of the biggest blocks of tropical forest north of the Amazon. Mayangna and Miskito communities hold title to much of the core and their territories are the reason any of it survives. Wildlife includes jaguar, tapir, harpy eagle and several monkey species. Access is genuinely hard: long journeys by road and river to Siuna or Waspam and then further by boat, with visits arranged through community organisations. Agricultural encroachment into the reserve has been severe and is the dominant issue here.

When to go

December to April is the drier window; rain is heavy for much of the year. River levels govern travel. Anything here needs weeks of arrangement rather than days.

Honest expectations

This is expedition territory with no tourist infrastructure: long uncomfortable journeys, no accommodation beyond community houses, and permissions negotiated with indigenous authorities. Encroachment and land conflict affect access, and current local advice is essential before planning. Wildlife sightings are unlikely.
