Getting thereFlights from Nouméa, around forty five minutes; ferry from Nouméa
EntryFree; customary fees at some sites

Maré is the southernmost and least visited of the Loyalty Islands, another raised coral platform with cliffs on much of its coast, and its best known sites are the Trou de Bone, a natural pool in the rock connected to the sea and clear enough to see the fish in it from above, and Yejele beach in the south, a long stretch of white sand. The Shabadran coast in the southeast is reached only on a long guided walk.

What you actually see

  • The Trou de Bone - a natural rock pool connected to the sea, clear from above.
  • Yejele beach - a long white beach on the southern coast.
  • The Shabadran coast - the eroded southeastern shore, reached on a guided walk.
  • The cliff coast - raised coral dropping to the sea around much of the island.

When to go

April to November is the dry cooler season. Cyclone season runs November to April. Flights are small and book out.

Honest expectations

Facilities are very limited and accommodation is mostly small guesthouses. Sites are on customary land with fees and permission needed. The Shabadran walk is long and hard and needs a guide.

Nearby

Lifou is north, and Nouméa is west.
