Tabuaeran (Fanning Island)

Far east in the Line Islands, Tabuaeran - Fanning - rings its lagoon a thousand-plus kilometres from Tarawa's authority: a copra-and-fishing atoll whose villages line the pass-cut ring, surf works the reef entrances (the island holds quiet legend among traveling surfers), and the outside world arrives by infrequent supply ship or the occasional cruise call that briefly triples the population.
