At Bourail the west coast drops its lagoon calm for drama: La Roche Percee's pierced headland and the freestanding Bonhomme sea stack guard a long beach where surf actually breaks - rare inside the reef - and loggerhead turtles haul out to nest in the southern summer, protected by a local association's patrols. The Three Bays walk rounds the headland to Turtle Bay's green-topped cliffs, offshore the Gouaro Bay reefs fill snorkels, and inland stretches La Brousse - New Caledonia's cattle country of stockmen, rodeos and the August Bourail agricultural fair, the Caldoche heartland at its most itself.

What you actually see

  • La Roche Percee - the pierced rock and the Bonhomme stack.
  • The Three Bays walk - headland path to Turtle Bay's cliffs.
  • Turtle nesting - loggerheads on summer-night patrols.
  • La Brousse - cattle country, rodeos and the August fair.

When to go

May to November for walking and settled weather; November to March brings nesting turtles (join official patrols only) and the August fair anchors the inland calendar. Surf runs best on swell windows.

Honest expectations

Currents off the beach deserve respect - swim the flagged or locally-endorsed corners; the surf is real. Turtle season runs on rules: no lights, no freelancing on the sand at night - the association's patrols are the legitimate way in. Bourail town is functional, not pretty; the coast does the charming.

Nearby

The Poe beach lagoon strip, Moindou's history and the west-coast road.
