The Domaine de Déva covers around eight thousand hectares of coast and dry forest west of Bourail, bought by the province to keep it out of speculative development and opened as a mixed protected area and leisure estate: nineteen kilometres of coastline with empty beaches, marked walking and cycling trails through the niaouli woodland, a golf course and a resort at one end. The lagoon offshore is part of the UNESCO-inscribed reef system.

What you actually see

  • The coastline - nineteen kilometres of largely empty beach and dune.
  • The niaouli woodland - the dry paperbark forest the trails run through.
  • The trail network - marked routes for walking and mountain biking.
  • The lagoon - the reef offshore within the inscribed New Caledonian lagoon system.

When to go

April to November is the dry cooler season. Summer is hot and humid on this coast. Trails are exposed with little shade.

Honest expectations

The estate is very large and a car is needed to move between parts of it. Trails have almost no shade. Facilities are concentrated at the resort end.

Nearby

Bourail is east, and Roche Percée is on the same coast.
