The Parc des Grandes Fougères covers around forty five square kilometres of humid forest in the hills above Farino, named for the tree ferns that fill the understorey, and it is one of the more reliable places to see the kagu, a flightless grey bird found only in New Caledonia and reduced to small populations. Marked walking and cycling trails run through the forest, and the park has a visitor centre at the entrance.

When to go
April to November is the drier season and best for walking. Kagu are most active early and late. Rain closes some trails.

Kagu sightings are still not guaranteed and need an early start and quiet. Trails are muddy after rain. The park closes some days of the week.
