Langtang is the nearest of Nepal's major trekking valleys to Kathmandu, which makes it the practical choice for anyone without the time or budget for Everest or Annapurna. The route climbs from river gorge and rhododendron forest into open yak pasture below high peaks, reaching Kyanjin Gompa at around 3,800 metres, from where day walks lead higher to Tserko Ri for a wide mountain panorama. The valley carries a recent history that visitors should know: in the 2015 earthquake, a massive avalanche buried Langtang village and killed a large number of residents and trekkers. The village has been rebuilt on a different site by returning families, and trekking here is now explicitly framed by the community as a way of supporting that recovery.

What you actually see

  • Kyanjin Gompa - the monastery settlement at the head of the valley, with a local cheese factory.
  • Tserko Ri - the acclimatisation climb to a high viewpoint above the valley.
  • Rhododendron forest - blazing red and pink in spring on the lower sections.
  • The memorial at Langtang - the rebuilt village and the memorial to those lost in 2015.

When to go

March to May for rhododendron bloom and stable weather, October to November for the clearest mountain views after the monsoon. Winter is cold with snow on the upper trail; the monsoon brings leeches, cloud and landslide risk on the road in.

Honest expectations

The road journey from Kathmandu is long, rough and prone to delay, and it is the part most people find hardest. Altitude is real: Kyanjin sits high enough that going too fast causes problems, so build in an acclimatisation day. Teahouses are simple and hot showers are charged. The 2015 history is present in the valley and deserves to be treated with some care rather than as scenery.

Nearby

Gosaikunda's sacred lakes connect by a high pass; Kathmandu is the road head.
