Anabar on the northeast coast has one of the wider stretches of sand on Nauru, an island whose shore is mostly coral pinnacle and rubble rather than beach. The reef flat runs out in front of it and the swell breaks on the edge some way offshore. Houses and coconut sit behind the sand and the ring road runs along the back of the whole bay. The bay sits at the northeastern corner of the ring road, about a third of the way round the island.

What you actually see

  • The sand - one of the wider beaches on an island short of them.
  • The reef flat - the shallow shelf running out from the shore.
  • The break - the swell working the reef edge offshore.
  • The coconut - the palms behind the beach along the road.

When to go

March to October is the drier season. November to February brings westerly weather. Tide governs the reef flat.

Honest expectations

The reef flat is sharp coral and shoes are needed to walk out on it. Swimming beyond the flat is not advisable because of the current. There are no facilities.

Nearby

Ijuw is south, and Ewa is west.
