Getting thereIn the North Sound near Rum Point; guided kayak or boat tour at night
EntryTour charged

In a sheltered corner of the North Sound the water holds dinoflagellates in enough concentration that any disturbance sets them glowing, so a paddle stroke leaves a trail of blue light and a hand dragged through the water lights up. Tours go out after dark by kayak or boat. The effect depends on the moon: a dark night shows it, a bright one washes it out. Tours launch from the Cayman Kai side of the sound and the paddle out takes around twenty minutes.

What you actually see

  • The glow - plankton lighting up wherever the water is disturbed.
  • The paddle trails - the light left behind each stroke.
  • The dark-night requirement - the effect that only shows without moonlight.
  • The mangrove setting - the sheltered corner of the sound the bay sits in.

When to go

December to April is the dry high season. New moon nights show the effect best. Tours do not run in rough weather.

Honest expectations

A bright moon can wipe out the effect entirely and tours still run. Photographs almost never work. Mosquitoes in the mangrove can be severe.

Nearby

Rum Point is west, and Starfish Point is northwest.
