Xai-Xai Beach

Xai-Xai beach runs for kilometres with a reef a couple of hundred metres out that takes the force off the surf, leaving a lagoon between reef and sand that is calm at low tide and good for snorkelling. At the northern end is Wenela, a natural tidal pool in the rock connected to the sea by an underwater tunnel, where water surges in and out with the swell. Exploring the tunnel is dangerous and it is not something to attempt.

What to look for

• The reef lagoon - calm water between the reef and the sand at low tide.
• The Wenela pool - a natural rock pool linked to the sea by an underwater tunnel.
• The blowhole - water forced up through the rock on a rising swell.
• The beach - kilometres of sand backed by dunes and casuarinas.

When to go

May to September is the cooler dry season and the best for snorkelling. Low tide is when the lagoon is calmest. Summer from November to March is hot and humid.

Practical notes

The Wenela tunnel should not be entered; the pool itself is safe to swim in. There are no lifeguards and currents at the reef gaps are strong. Facilities along the beach are limited and some lodges are run down.
