Xai-Xai Beach

Xai-Xai beach runs for kilometres with a reef a couple of hundred metres out that takes the force off the surf, leaving a lagoon between reef and sand that is calm at low tide and good for snorkelling. At the northern end is Wenela, a natural tidal pool in the rock connected to the sea by an underwater tunnel, where water surges in and out with the swell. Divers have died exploring the tunnel and it is not something to attempt.

What you actually see

When to go

May to September is the cooler dry season and the best for snorkelling. Low tide is when the lagoon is calmest. Summer from November to March is hot and humid.

Honest expectations

The Wenela tunnel has killed divers and should not be entered; the pool itself is safe to swim in. There are no lifeguards and currents at the reef gaps are strong. Facilities along the beach are limited and some lodges are run down.
