Macaneta is a peninsula between the Incomati river and the sea north of Maputo, reached by a small chain ferry at Marracuene and then a sand track through dune forest, and the beach on the ocean side runs for kilometres with high dunes behind it and very little on it. It is the closest wild beach to the capital and fills at weekends with Maputo families, and empties completely during the week.

When to go
May to September is the cooler dry season and the most comfortable. Weekends bring Maputo crowds; weekdays are empty. Summer from November to March is hot and humid with storms.
Honest expectations
The sand track needs a four-wheel drive and vehicles get stuck regularly. The ferry has limited hours and queues at weekends. Surf on this coast is strong and there are no lifeguards.
