Namaacha

Namaacha sits at around six hundred metres on the Lebombo range at the border with Eswatini, and the altitude gives it a climate noticeably cooler than the coast, which is why it was built up as a colonial hill retreat with a large church, a seminary and stone villas. A waterfall drops in a gorge just outside the town, running strongly after rain and reducing to little in the dry season. Flowers grow well here and the town sells them at the roadside.

When to go

December to April, in the rains, is when the waterfall actually runs. May to September is the most comfortable for the town but the falls are reduced. The border post is busiest at weekends.

Honest expectations

The waterfall is often a trickle in the dry season and visitors are disappointed. Many colonial buildings are in poor repair. The town is a border post first and a destination second.

Maputo is east, and the Eswatini border is at the edge of town.
