Prokletije, the Accursed Mountains, form the southern end of the Dinaric chain where Montenegro, Albania and Kosovo meet, and the Montenegrin part was made a national park in 2009, the country's newest. The peaks are sharp limestone with glacial cirques below them, rising over two thousand five hundred metres, and the range holds relict species including Balkan chamois and the Balkan lynx. The Peaks of the Balkans trail crosses it.

What you actually see

  • The limestone peaks - sharp summits rising over two thousand five hundred metres.
  • The glacial cirques - bowls and lakes below the ridges.
  • The Peaks of the Balkans trail - the long-distance route crossing three countries.
  • The relict species - Balkan chamois, lynx and endemic plants of the range.

When to go

June to September is the walking season; snow lies on the high routes into early summer. The Peaks of the Balkans route needs border permits arranged in advance. Weather changes fast at altitude.

Honest expectations

Cross-border sections of the trail require permits obtained in advance. Trail marking is uneven and a map and compass are needed. Accommodation is limited to katuns and a few guesthouses.

Nearby

Grebaje Valley is inside the park, and Plav is north.
