Djurdjevica Tara Bridge

The Đurđevića Tara bridge crosses the Tara canyon on five concrete arches, the largest spanning about a hundred and sixteen metres, and when it was finished in 1940 it was among the largest such bridges in Europe. In 1942 one of its arches was blown up; a monument at one end remembers Lazar Jauković, one of the engineers who had built it. A zip line now runs across the gorge beside it.

When to go

May to October is the season; the road is open year round but winter conditions are difficult. Mornings are quietest. Summer brings coach parties and traffic on the bridge.

Before you go

The bridge is a working road crossing and pedestrians share it with traffic. Souvenir stalls and zip line touts at both ends are persistent. Parking in summer is chaotic.
