Uayma

Uayma's church stops travelers who thought they had seen Yucatan's repertoire. The Franciscan temple of Santo Domingo, founded in the 1640s and rebuilt after the Caste War burned it in the 1840s, wears a facade unlike any other in Mexico: deep oxblood red stuccoed with white eight-pointed stars, rosettes and double-headed Habsburg eagles, the whole composition framing snail-shell columns around the door - folk baroque at its most joyous, executed with stones scavenged, the village will tell you, from Chichen Itza itself. The interior keeps the fortress simplicity of the early missions - bare vault, a modest altar, swallows in the light - and the village square around it does Yucatecan life at its most unhurried: huipil-clad grandmothers, tricycle taxis, an ice-cream cart at dusk. Restoration in the 2000s returned the facade's color, and photographers now make the pilgrimage for the hour when low sun sets the red burning and the stars glow like chalk constellations. It asks thirty minutes and repays them completely.

When to go

Golden hour - early morning or late afternoon - for the facade at full burn; Sunday mornings add mass-going village life. Any dry-season day serves.

Honest expectations

Uayma is a one-monument village: come as a detour en route to Ek Balam or Rio Lagartos rather than a destination. Services are a shop and a square. The interior may be closed outside mass times; the facade is the point.

Nearby

Ek Balam's acropolis and Valladolid's plaza are each twenty minutes; the Temozon smoked-meat village lies on the same back road.
