Izamal

Izamal is painted one color - a saturated egg-yolk yellow with white trim that covers convent, arcades, houses and corner stores alike - and the effect at full sun is of walking inside amber. The color scheme wraps a double history: this was a great Maya pilgrimage city sacred to the creator god Itzamna, and its pyramids were too big to demolish, so the town simply grew around and on top of them. The Franciscans made the point architecturally in 1561 by leveling the acropolis and building the convent of San Antonio de Padua on its platform - its arcaded atrium ranks among the largest church courtyards anywhere, and the Virgin of Izamal inside is Yucatan's patroness, visited by Pope John Paul II in 1993. Two blocks away, the Kinich Kakmo pyramid - one of Mexico's bulkiest by volume - shoulders out of the houses, climbable to a summit view of yellow streets and green flatness to the horizon. Victorias - horse-drawn carriages - clop between craft workshops, cochinita kitchens and plazas where the whole golden town poses for its own portrait.

When to go

Dry-season mornings and late afternoons, when low sun sets the yellow alight; midday flattens it and bakes the pyramid climb. Fiesta days around the Virgin's feasts fill the atrium.

Honest expectations

Izamal is small and slow by design - the checklist is short, the atmosphere is the attraction. The pyramid climb is steep and unrestored in stretches. Day-trip crowds pulse through midday; staying a night buys the golden hours.
