Progreso
Merida's Gulf beach - a long malecon of seafood terraces, warm shallow water and the horizon-piercing pier, half an hour from the white city.

Progreso is where Merida goes to breathe salt. The port town strings along a wide Gulf beach of pale sand and bathtub-warm, waist-deep water - the Gulf here shelves so gently that its pier, built to reach shipping depth, runs just over 8 kilometres to sea, certified by Guinness World Records in 2023 as the longest in the world, a concrete arrow dissolving into haze. The malecon holds the life: a palm-lined promenade of seafood terraces serving whole fried boquinete, ceviches and micheladas to families under umbrellas, with kite vendors, sandcastle competitions and the evening volleyball leagues of a genuine Mexican beach town rather than a resort. Cruise ships call regularly, pulsing the front with day-trippers before returning it to meridano weekend rhythm. A new pier-side district, the Museo del Meteorito, a beachfront museum of the Chicxulub crater - whose center lies just offshore - and El Corchito's mangrove springs across the harbor round out the excursions. It is unglamorous, cheerful and exactly what a hot city's beach should be.
What you actually see
- The malecon - terraces, palms and family beach life.
- The endless pier - eight kilometres of concrete to deep water.
- The warm shallows - Gulf water calm enough for toddlers.
- The seafood tables - fried fish and ceviche by the kilo.
When to go
November to April for dry heat tempered by sea breeze; check cruise schedules if you want the malecon local-paced. Summer weekends belong joyously to Merida families.
Honest expectations
The Gulf here is green-brown and calm, not Caribbean turquoise - it is a swimming beach, not a snorkeling one. Seaweed arrives seasonally. Vendors work the sand persistently but good-naturedly.
Nearby
El Corchito's spring pools, the Chicxulub museum and Dzibilchaltun's ruins are all within twenty minutes; Merida is half an hour.
