Sagar Shiv Mandir

The Sagar Shiv Mandir stands on a small islet just off the shore at Poste de Flacq on the east coast, joined to the mainland by a short causeway, and the setting is the whole point: a whitewashed and painted temple with a Shiva figure and Nandi bull surrounded by lagoon water, with the reef line beyond. It was founded in the 1980s and has been extended since, and it draws worshippers from across the east of the island as well as visitors stopping on the coast road. The lagoon here is shallow and the water changes colour through the day. Casuarina trees line the shore nearby, and the beach beside the causeway is used by local families at weekends.

When to go

May to December for the clearer weather. Maha Shivaratri in February or March brings the largest crowds. Early morning and late afternoon give the best light on the water.

Honest expectations

The temple is modern and modest in scale; the setting carries the visit. Shoes are removed and dress should be respectful. The causeway is exposed at high water in rough conditions. There is little shade and no facilities.
