Tondidarou Megaliths
Carved standing stones on the plain near Niafunké, of uncertain date and purpose.

On the plain near Niafunké stand groups of carved stone pillars, roughly cylindrical and marked with incised patterns and in some cases with features read as faces, set upright in clusters. They are unlike anything else in Mali and their date and purpose remain unresolved, with estimates spread across many centuries. A number were removed in the colonial period and are in museums abroad, which is part of why the site is hard to interpret.
What to look for
- The carved pillars - cylindrical stones with incised patterns, set upright in groups.
- The clusters - the arrangement of the stones across the plain.
- The unresolved date - a monument whose age and purpose are still argued.
- The open setting - flat country with the stones standing alone.
When to go
November to February is the comfortable season. March to May is extremely hot with no shade. The site is open ground at all times.
Things to know
A number of the best stones were removed to museums abroad. The site is unmarked and finding it needs a guide. There is no shade, water or interpretation.
