The Niger by Pinasse

The Niger built every Malian glory - Djenne, Timbuktu, the empires between - and travelling it by pinasse, the long covered riverboat of the middle Niger, remains the country's essential motion: gliding past Bozo fishing camps whose nets flash in the shallows, Fulani herds swimming channel crossings horn-first, riverside mosques in banco silhouette, and the water's own traffic of pirogues loaded to the gunwales. Day excursions run from Segou and other river towns; longer charters, seasons and conditions permitting, string river days into journeys - deck shade, tea on the charcoal brazier, and the Sahel sliding by at walking pace.

When to go

River travel is arranged travel: charters, local boatmen and current-conditions planning are the entire method - improvisation is neither possible nor wise. Comforts are mat-and-shade level; sun off the water is fierce. The reward is the country's oldest road at its own speed.
