Gunung Nuang

At 1,493 metres Nuang is the highest point in Selangor and sits on the boundary with Pahang and Negeri Sembilan, and its reputation among Klang Valley hikers is as the standard training mountain - not technical, but long and relentless. The route from Pangsun starts with about five kilometres of flat logging track, which lulls people, then crosses the river repeatedly before reaching Kem Lolo and Kem Pacat, after which it becomes a continuous steep climb through leech-heavy forest to the false summits and then the top. Round trip is commonly ten to twelve hours and around twenty kilometres, and a great many people turn back at Kem Pacat. The summit itself is a small clearing with a limited view; the point is the effort. Rain makes the river crossings dangerous and the descent treacherous.

Things to know

Ten to twelve hours round trip and much harder than the modest height suggests - start before dawn. Leeches are constant. River crossings flood fast and can cut off the way back. The summit view is limited.
