Klang Gates Quartz Ridge

The Klang Gates ridge is a wall of quartz running about fourteen kilometres north-east of Kuala Lumpur, up to two hundred metres high and in places only a few metres wide at the top - a hydrothermal vein intruded into the surrounding granite and left standing when the softer rock eroded away, and it is generally described as the longest quartz ridge in the world. The stone is white and the ridge shows as a pale spine above the forest. It carries a specialised flora adapted to the mineral substrate and the exposure, with several species found nowhere else. Bukit Tabur, the western end, became a popular scramble from Kuala Lumpur, and after a series of deaths and rescues on the exposed sections access was restricted: a permit from the forestry department is required and unguided climbing is prohibited. The ridge is genuinely dangerous - narrow, loose, and with long drops.

Things to know

A permit is required and unguided climbing is prohibited after fatal accidents - this is enforced. The ridge is narrow, loose and exposed with long drops, and it is not a casual hike. Start early; the heat is severe by mid-morning.
