Thuma Forest Reserve
A hilly miombo reserve between Lilongwe and the lake, holding elephant in difficult walking country.

Thuma covers around two hundred square kilometres of steep miombo hills between Lilongwe and the lake, and it holds a population of elephant along with buffalo, leopard and a long bird list. Management by a trust from the 1990s brought the poaching under control. There are no roads for game driving; everything is done on foot with armed guides, which makes it demanding and rewarding in equal measure.

When to go
June to October is the dry season and the only practical window. The rains make the access road impassable. Walking is hard work in the heat.
Things to know
There is no game driving; everything is walking in steep country in heat, which is genuinely demanding. Access needs four-wheel drive. Elephant here are wild and encounters on foot require discipline.
