Mua Mission and KuNgoni Centre

Founded by White Fathers in 1902 beneath the escarpment, Mua Mission grew into something rare: a place where missionary history turned toward deep cultural custodianship. Its KuNgoni Centre houses the Chamare Museum, widely counted the best in Malawi, unfolding Chewa, Yao and Ngoni history and cosmology - including an unmatched treatment of the Gule Wamkulu masked tradition, presented with the community's blessing - across vivid painted halls. Around the museum, Mua's carving workshop has trained generations of Malawi's finest sculptors, whose work fills churches and collections worldwide, and the mission's gardens and old buildings invite a slow half day.

A guided visit is close to essential - the museum's depth unlocks with interpretation, and guides here are exceptional; allow two to three unhurried hours. The Gule Wamkulu material is sacred to the Chewa - photograph and discuss it with the respect the museum models. Carvings sell at fair fixed prices; haggling misreads the room.
