Kuti is a small reserve near Salima run by a community trust, stocked with zebra, giraffe, sable, kudu, impala and other plains game but with no lions, elephant or buffalo, which means the whole thing can be walked, cycled or ridden without an armed guard. That makes it unusual in the region and useful for anyone who wants to be on foot among animals. It also takes in rescued animals and runs conservation education.

What you actually see

  • The walking safari - game viewing on foot without dangerous species present.
  • The plains game - zebra, giraffe, sable and antelope stocked in the reserve.
  • The cycling and riding - the other ways the reserve is covered.
  • The community trust - the local body that runs the reserve.

When to go

May to October is the dry season and best for game. The rains bring long grass and mud. Early morning and late afternoon are the productive hours.

Honest expectations

The animals are introduced and managed rather than a wild population. The reserve is small and a day covers it. Facilities are basic camping and chalets.

Nearby

Salima is east, and Senga Bay is beyond it.
