Trakai Historical National Park protects the water world around Lithuania's old capital, a maze of lakes, peninsulas and islands where the red island castle floats on Lake Galve. Beyond the famous castle it is a landscape for boats and bikes, and home to the Karaim community brought here in the Middle Ages.

The island castle is the star and can be crowded, so the surrounding lakes and paths are where you find calm. It is an easy day trip from Vilnius, which means summer weekends are busy. Renting a paddleboat is the nicest way to see it.
