Palanga Beach and Pier

Palanga is the summer capital of the Lithuanian coast, a long white-sand beach backed by pine and dune, with a wooden pier where crowds gather to watch the sun drop into the Baltic. Behind the sand runs Basanaviciaus street, a loud, cheerful promenade of amber shops, cafes and fairground fun.

When to go

July and August for full resort life and warm sand; June and early September for quieter beaches. Sunset at the pier is the ritual in any warm month.

Honest expectations

In peak summer it is loud, crowded and commercial, the opposite of a quiet coast, which is either the appeal or the problem. The Baltic stays cold even in August, so swimming is bracing. Out of season it empties and turns peaceful.

The Palanga Amber Museum sits in the manor park; the Curonian Spit and Klaipeda are a short way south.
