Hill of Crosses

A small hill near Siauliai covered in well over a hundred thousand crosses - a place of pilgrimage and quiet defiance that the Soviets bulldozed and the people rebuilt.

The Hill of Crosses is a low mound near Siauliai buried under an uncountable forest of crosses, well over a hundred thousand of them, from towering carved crucifixes to tiny rosaries. People have planted them here for generations; the Soviets bulldozed the hill more than once, and each time crosses reappeared overnight, which is why it became a symbol of endurance.

What you actually see

  • The mass of crosses - the dense, layered forest of crosses covering the hill.
  • The paths through - narrow ways winding among the towering crucifixes.
  • Left offerings - rosaries and small crosses hung on larger ones.
  • The quiet atmosphere - the wind moving the smaller crosses is the sound of the place.

When to go

Year-round; misty or grey days suit its solemn mood, and early or late visits avoid coach groups. You can add your own cross, sold at the stalls nearby.

Honest expectations

It is out on the northern plains, a real detour rather than a convenient stop, so plan the drive. Around midday it draws tour coaches, which breaks the quiet; come early or late. It is a place to feel rather than a sight to tick, and moves many people deeply.

Nearby

Siauliai city is south; the route links naturally with Latvia and Riga to the north.
