Pakruojis was held by the von Ropp family from the eighteenth century, and what makes it exceptional is completeness: not just a house but the whole working estate survives, over forty buildings including stables, granaries, a brewery, a windmill, an ice house, workers' cottages and a stone-arched bridge over the Kruoja, laid out around a park. After decades of neglect the estate was bought and restored privately from 2010, and it now runs as a visitor attraction with reconstructed interiors, animals, craft workshops and a heavy programme of events, including a much-advertised summer flower festival. That commercial approach divides opinion, but the ensemble itself is the most complete manor estate in the country and worth seeing for that.

What you actually see

  • The full estate - over forty working buildings around the park.
  • The stone bridge - the arched crossing of the Kruoja.
  • Restored interiors - the manor rooms and outbuildings furnished.
  • Craft workshops - smithy, bakery and other estate trades demonstrated.

When to go

May to September for the park and the events; the flower festival runs through summer. The estate reduces hours substantially in winter. Weekends and festival days are crowded.

Honest expectations

The restoration is commercial and heavily themed, with costumed staff and paid attractions layered on the historic fabric, which is not to everyone's taste. Entry and extras add up. It is busy in season. Purists will find the interpretation loose.

Nearby

Šiauliai lies west; Žagarė is northwest.
