Steg sits at around 1,300 metres on the road up to Malbun, a small settlement at the mouth of the Valünatal with a reservoir beside it, and the valley running back from it is alpine meadow and forest with a stream through the middle. In winter it is Liechtenstein's cross-country skiing ground; in summer it is walking and the meadows come out in flower. The Gänglesee reservoir is the focus. A tunnel runs from Steg through to Triesenberg, cut to keep the road open when the pass was blocked.

When to go
June to September is the walking season with the meadows at their best in July. December to March is the cross-country season. The shoulder months are quiet.
Honest expectations
The settlement is very small with few facilities. Snow cover for skiing is not reliable in warm winters. The road up is winding.
