Schellenberg Castle Ruins

Two castle ruins stand at Schellenberg on the Eschnerberg ridge in Liechtenstein's northern lowland, the Upper and Lower castles, both built in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries by the lords the county took its name from. Walls, a tower base and parts of the enclosures survive in woodland. The historical Eschnerberg trail links them and the ridge gives a view over the Rhine valley. The lords of Schellenberg sold the castles and their rights in 1317, and under later owners both were abandoned in the early sixteenth century.

• The Rhine valley view - the outlook from the ridge over the plain.

When to go

April to October is the walking season. Autumn colour on the ridge is good in October. Winter leaves the paths icy.

Honest expectations

Both ruins are fragmentary and largely wall footings. Interpretation is limited to signs. The walk between them is short and easy.
