The Furstensteig was cut into the rock of the Drei Schwestern - Three Sisters - massif in 1898 to mark forty years of Prince Johann II's reign, and it remains Liechtenstein's signature mountain route: a narrow path traversing cliff faces on ledges and steps, secured with cables and short ladders, with the Rhine valley a vertical kilometre below and views across to Switzerland and Austria. Linked with the Drei Schwestern ridge it makes a demanding full-day circuit, and it earns its reputation - exposure is constant, and the little principality suddenly feels very alpine indeed.

What you actually see

  • The cable-secured traverse - ledges and steps across the cliff faces.
  • Three Sisters summits - the rocky triple crown of the ridge.
  • Rhine valley views - the drop to the valley floor and Swiss peaks beyond.
  • Gafadura hut - the mountain refreshment stop on the circuit.

When to go

Snow-free roughly June to October; check conditions early and late in that window since snow patches linger on shaded ledges. Clear, dry days only - the rock is dangerous wet, and afternoon storms build fast in summer. Start early.

Honest expectations

This is a genuine via-ferrata-adjacent route: sustained exposure, cables you must use, and no place for vertigo, small children or trail runners in worn shoes. People have died here in poor conditions. Helmets are sensible for rockfall. The circuit takes fit hikers six to seven hours. Those wanting the views without the exposure should ride to Gaflei and walk the gentler panorama trails instead.

Nearby

Vaduz, the alpine village of Malbun and the panorama trails above Triesenberg.
