At Nendeln the foundations of a Roman villa rustica were excavated and left exposed, a farm estate of the first to fourth centuries that worked the fertile ground along the Rhine, with the outlines of the main building, a bath suite and outbuildings visible under a protective roof. It is the most substantial Roman site in Liechtenstein and sits between houses in the modern village. A Roman road ran along this side of the Rhine and the estate would have sat directly on it.

What you actually see

  • The villa foundations - the outlines of the main building and its rooms.
  • The bath suite - the heated section of the estate house.
  • The protective roof - the cover keeping the remains exposed and visible.
  • The Rhine ground - the fertile land the estate worked.

When to go

April to October is the pleasant season; the site is covered and visible year round. Interpretation panels are on site. Winter is cold but access is open.

Honest expectations

What survives is foundations at ankle height and needs the panels to make sense. The site sits among modern houses. An hour covers it.

Nearby

Eschen is north, and Schaan is south.
