Liberia has one of the most unusual and fascinating national histories in Africa. In the nineteenth century, freed and formerly enslaved African-Americans, resettled by an American colonisation movement, founded here what became, in 1847, Africa's oldest modern republic, modelling its flag, constitution and institutions on those of the United States. These settlers, the Americo-Liberians, created a distinctive culture, with echoes of the American South in dress, architecture, churches and names, that long dominated the country, blended, often uneasily, with the rich traditions of Liberia's many indigenous peoples.
